Chicken Boot Camp
Chicken Boot Camp is a 3-week, super intensive course on keeping chickens in the City of Columbus. It will run Thursdays beginning February 2, 2017 at City Folks Farm Shop in Clintonville. Homework is required for this course.
- Week 1: Getting Started (Thursday, Feb. 2) We will cover the new urban livestock permitting process for the City of Columbus, along with permitting policy for other suburban areas; deciding on the perfect coop for you, budgeting for chickens and chick rearing.
- Week 2: Raising a Safe and Healthy Flock (Thursday, Feb. 9) This week covers poultry husbandry. How to raise a healthy flock, disease identification and treatments, bio-security on the urban farm, protecting your flock from predators and chore schedules.
- Week 3: The Laying Hen and Beyond (Thursday, Feb. 16) Egg-Laying A-Z: care and handling of your laying flock, with live chickens for you to handle; safe methods to add new chickens to an existing flock. We may also explore husbandry for other domestic poultry for the urban farm as well.
Cost of 3-week course: $75. Pre-register by January 27.
Instructor: Denise Beno Denise has kept chickens since her childhood on a small family farm. She is former organic egg producer and has served as board member for the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association. She now enjoys urban livestock and does private poultry consultation. Denise regularly presents poultry classes at City Folks Farm Shop in Columbus.
