Denise Beno Anderson, a former local poultry producer and past board member of the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association, is offering a series of drop-in classes for the info urban chicken keepers need. Classes will be held Tuesdays January 15 – March 5 from 6:30 – 8 pm at City Folk’s Farm Shop.

Each class costs $10 at the door or pre-register for the whole series of 8 classes for just $65.

1/15/2013 – Week 1 – Getting Started: why backyard chickens?
1/22/2013 – Week 2 – Chicks! Brooding, housing, feeding, safety
1/29/2013 – Week 3 – Meat Birds: From the brooder to the oven in less than 60 days
2/5/2013 – Week 4 – Layers: Point of Lay to Cull and everything in between
2/12/2013 – Week 5 – Health and Safety: Common ailments, preventative care, predation and bio-security
2/19/2013 – Week 6 – Butchering and Culling: Butchering methods, alternatives to home butcher, culling the laying flock
2/26/2013 – Week 7 – Housing and Handling: Explore housing options, regulations, and poultry handling
3/5/2013 – Week 8 – Taking it Further: Hatching your own, breeding, sales, and expanding the flock

  1. I’d like to register for the first class: 1/15/2013 – Week 1 – Getting Started: why backyard chickens?. I’m not sure yet about the rest of them, I’ll need to see what I’m getting into before I commit further.
